On April 5, 2016, the Government of Vietnam promulgated Decree 23/2016/ND-CP on the construction, management, and use of cemeteries and cremation facilities.
With the aim of changing old customs, saving land resources, and protecting the environment, the State encourages people to use the civilized and modern method of cremation instead of the burial method that many people still choose today.
Ethnic minority areas are encouraged to use cremation at cremation facilities according to planning.
At the same time, the State has policies to support those who use cremation services as follows:
- Individuals using cremation services are supported with cremation costs, transportation costs, and other costs (if any).
- The provincial People's Committee, based on the local economic and social conditions, shall regulate the support for the aforementioned costs for individuals using cremation services.
Decree 23/2016/ND-CP is effective from May 27, 2016, and replaces Decree 35/2008/ND-CP.
