What are the Conditions for Foreigners to Acquire Vietnamese Citizenship?

Vietnamese law permits foreigners and stateless persons to acquire Vietnamese nationality with limitations and oversight. Foreign nationals and stateless persons who are permanent residents in Vietnam and submit applications for Vietnamese nationality may be granted Vietnamese nationality upon meeting the following conditions:

- Possess full civil act capacity as defined by Vietnamese law;- Comply with the Constitution and Laws of Vietnam; respect the traditions, customs, and practices of the Vietnamese nation;- Have sufficient proficiency in Vietnamese language to integrate into the Vietnamese community;- Have been a permanent resident in Vietnam for 5 years or more up to the time of applying for Vietnamese nationality;- Have the ability to ensure life in Vietnam.

Applicants for Vietnamese nationality may be granted Vietnamese citizenship without satisfying the above conditions if they fall under one of the following cases:

- Being the spouse, biological parent, or biological child of a Vietnamese citizen;- Having made special contributions to the cause of building and defending the Vietnamese Fatherland;- Being beneficial to the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Those who acquire Vietnamese nationality must renounce their foreign nationality, except in special cases, if permitted by the President.
