Vietnam: Automatic monitoring of salinity of seawater and data transmission 24 times a day

This is a noteworthy content in Circular 08/2020/TT-BTNMT of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam on the technical methods for hydrological monitoring, issued on September 11, 2020.

To be specific, in Article 19 of Circular 08/2020/TT-BTNMT, the method for monitoring the salinity of seawater in Vietnam is stipulated as follows:

- When the sea waves are small: submerge the measuring head directly 0.5 m into the water for at least 3 minutes; press the key to trigger the salinity measurement policies, and when the value on the machine is stable, record it in the monitoring log;

- When the sea waves are large: use a tool to take water at a depth of less than 0.5 m; submerge the measuring head into the tool and gently shake it for at least 3 minutes; press the key to trigger the salinity measurement policies, and when the value on the machine is stable, record it in the monitoring log (must protect the sample from sun and rain to avoid altering the data's true value);

- Automatic monitoring of salinity of seawater: automatically monitor and transmit data 24 times a day or as needed

Specifically, the hydrological monitoring location and hydrological monitoring constructions in Vietnam are specified as follows:

- Have a monitoring area that must be in communication with the outside;

- Have a depth of 0.5 m or more;

- Be a fixed location, ensuring long-term monitoring;

- Not affected by dirty water, hot water from production facilities;

- Not be near concrete or stone structures;

- Have no vegetation, trash, or floating objects affecting the equipment when measuring water temperature;

- Be convenient and safe for both personnel and equipment during monitoring;

- For automatic measuring stations: the mounting frame for measuring devices must meet technical specifications; the monitoring location and construction are to be fixed to piers, offshore platforms, wells, buoys, and turtles.

More details may be found in Circular 08/2020/TT-BTNMT effective from October 26, 2020.
