The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology is an agency under the Government of Vietnam, performing the function of basic research in natural sciences and technology development; providing scientific grounds for the management of science, technology, and policy-making, strategies, and planning for economic and social development; and training high-level scientific and technological human resources in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Basic research on natural sciences and technology development in the following fields: Mathematics; physics; chemistry; biology; biotechnology; information technology; electronics, automation; space technology; materials science; biodiversity and bioactive substances; earth sciences; marine science and technology; environment and energy; forecasting, prevention, and mitigation of natural disasters;
Comprehensive research on natural resources, natural conditions, and the environment;
Implementation, application, and transfer of scientific research and technology results;
Proposal and leadership in the execution of national-level key scientific and technological tasks as assigned by the competent state authorities;
Propagation, dissemination of knowledge, scientific research results, and technology development to meet the requirements of the science and technology market development.
