Law on Public Employees 2010 stipulates that individuals who are successfully recruited as public employees must undergo an internship period, except in cases where they have already completed at least 12 months of professional and vocational work relevant to the requirements of the position for which they are being recruited.

Candidates who are selected to be teachers in preschool education institutions, general education institutions, continuing education institutions, specialized schools; candidates who are selected to be lecturers in colleges (excluding vocational colleges), universities, academies, regional universities, and national universities under the national education system (collectively referred to as educational institutions) must undergo a probationary period as stipulated in Circular 05/2016/TT-BGDDT.
To be appointed to the professional titles for teachers, the candidates must undergo the following probationary periods:
- For preschool teachers: 6 months;- For primary school teachers: 6 months;- For lower secondary school teachers: 9 months;- For upper secondary school teachers: 9 months;- For lecturers: 12 months.
Special cases regarding the probationary period:
- The probationary period does not include the time spent on maternity leave according to social insurance benefits, the time of illness lasting 3 days or more, and the time of temporary detention, custody, or suspension of work as stipulated by the law. The probationary period will continue immediately after the candidate finishes the maternity leave under the social insurance regime; recovers from illness; completes the period of temporary detention, custody, or suspension of work as per regulations of the competent authority.- Candidates selected to be teachers or lecturers who have taught in educational institutions suitable for the recruited position for 12 months or more do not have to undergo the probationary period.- Candidates selected to be lecturers with a doctoral degree and who have participated in teaching during their doctoral research period may have their probationary period shortened by the head of the educational institution.- The head of the educational institutions decides the time to resume the probationary period for cases that have not ensured sufficient probationary time.
