Below is a noteworthy content regulated in Circular 01/2016/TT-BYT issued by the Ministry of Health of Vietnam on January 05, 2016, regarding the prescription of traditional medicine, and the prescription of traditional medicine combined with modern pharmaceuticals.
The duration of drug use in outpatient prescriptions in Vietnam is regulated by Circular 01 as follows:
- Chronic diseases (long-term treatment): Each prescription should provide a sufficient quantity of medicine for up to 30 days or according to the treatment guidelines for each disease;
- Other diseases: Each prescription should provide a sufficient dosage of medicine for up to 7 days;
Note, for remote areas, border regions, islands, areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, or areas without doctors, traditional medicine physicians can prescribe treatment for up to 30 days, applicable only to traditional medicine prescriptions.
In addition, Circular 01 also stipulates the duration of drug use in inpatient prescription as follows:
- Acute diseases: Prescriptions should be made at least twice within 7 days.
- Chronic diseases: Each prescription should provide a sufficient dosage for up to 10 days.
Especially for cases combining traditional medicine with western medicine, the duration of use for western medicine should follow the regulations for western medicine prescription.
