Guidance on methods for monitoring sea water temperature in Vietnam (Illustrative image)
Article 16 Circular 08/2020/TT-BTNMT stipulates the method for monitoring sea water temperature in Vietnam as follows:
First, monitoring sea water temperature with a thermometer:
- In case of small sea waves: The observer reaches the designated location and proceeds with the observation; immerses the thermometer 0.5 m deep in water vertically, quickly pulls up the thermometer, empties the bulb and continues to submerge the thermometer at the initial depth; the thermometer should be underwater for at least 3 minutes; quickly pulls it up; reads the value on the thermometer, first the decimal part, then the integer, accurate to 0.1ºC; records it in the observation log (during the day, standing with back to the sun; at night, shining a flashlight from behind the thermometer).
- In case of large sea waves: The observer reaches the designated location and proceeds with the observation; uses a device to take water at a depth of less than 0.5 m, when observing must shield the sample from sun and rain to avoid altering the actual value of the data; dips the thermometer into the water and gently shakes it two to three times; lifts the thermometer, empties the bulb and dips it back into the water for at least 3 minutes; reads the value on the thermometer, first the decimal part, then the integer, accurate to 0.1ºC; records it in the observation log.
Second, monitoring sea water temperature with a handheld device:
- When sea waves are small: submerge the sensor head directly 0.5 m deep in the water, for at least 3 minutes; press the power button to measure temperature, when the value on the device stabilizes, record it in the observation log.
- When sea waves are large: use a device to take water at a depth of less than 0.5 m; submerge the sensor head into the sample collection device and gently shake, for at least 3 minutes; press the power button to measure temperature, when the value on the device stabilizes, record it in the observation log (must shield the sample from sun and rain to avoid altering the actual value of the data).
Third, monitoring sea water temperature with an automated device: automatically measures and transmits data 24 times/day or as required.
