Location and functions of the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources

The Institute of Geological Sciences and Mineral Resources is a public scientific and technological unit under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Its functions include scientific research and technological development in the fields of geology, mineral resources, geological resources, underground water resources, geological heritage and geoparks, marine geology, environmental geology, geological hazards, urban geology, medical geology, engineering geology, and geotechnics (referred to collectively as geology and mineral resources). It also provides doctoral-level training in geology and mineral resources, as prescribed by law.

The Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources is a budget-using unit, has legal status, has its own seal and account, is headquartered in Hanoi and operates under the financial autonomy mechanism of public service units.

Duties and powers of the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources

Pursuant to Article 2 of Decision 268/QD-BTNMT 2024, the tasks and powers of the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources include:

- Developing and submit to the Minister the Institute's development strategy, long-term, 5-year, and annual science and technology research and deployment plan on geology and minerals; Organize implementation after approval.

- Basic research on the history of the development of the Earth's crust, the structure and material composition of geological formations; assessing the potential of geological and mineral resources to build scientific arguments to serve basic investigations in the field of geology and minerals.

- Researching scientific basis to serve the development of policies, laws, standards, technical regulations, and economic and technical norms on geology and minerals; strategies, planning, and plans on geology and minerals

- Applying research and the transfer of scientific and technological advances in geology and minerals; Implement programs, schemes, projects, tasks, and scientific research topics; Monitoring tasks on geological hazards, environmental geology, and geotechnical engineering according to the provisions of the law.

- Doctoral level training in geology and minerals; participate in training and fostering civil servants and public employees in geology and minerals as assigned by the Minister.

- Appraising programs, schemes, projects, tasks, and scientific and technological research topics on geology and minerals as assigned by the Minister.

- Organizing, compiling, editing, publishing, posting, and announcing scientific and technological information publications and scientific and technological research results on geology and minerals, information on training and scientific research activities of the Institute, and related units according to regulations.

- Providing scientific and technological services in geology and minerals; consulting, investigating, evaluating, exploring, exploiting, closing mineral mines; and protecting the environment in mineral activities according to the provisions of law.

- Performing processing, analysis, and testing of geological samples to serve scientific research and technology deployment in geology and minerals.

- National focal point to support national coordination of geoparks and carry out activities related to the development and management of the Vietnam Global Geopark Network within the framework of the activities of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network; building and guiding the construction of projects on geological heritage, geological conservation, and geoparks as assigned by the Minister.

- Implementing administrative reform, practicing thrift, preventing and combating waste, and performing anti-corruption tasks under the Institute's management scope according to the ministry's programs and plans and the Minister's assignment.

- Managing the organization, apparatus, job positions, and employee structure according to professional titles and the number of people working at the Institute as assigned by the Minister and according to the provisions of law.

- Financial and asset management; carrying out the responsibilities of the budget using units towards the units under the Institute according to the provisions of law.

- Statistics and periodic and extraordinary reports on the implementation of assigned tasks.

- Performing other tasks assigned by the Minister.
