This is one of the provisions on the meal allocation for crew members as stipulated in Circular 40/2017/TT-BYT issued by the Ministry of Health on October 23, 2017, aimed at regulating the sanitary and safety standards for food, drinking water, and meal allocation for crew members.
Circular 40 stipulates the daily dietary energy intake for crew members:
- For male crew members, from 2,926 Kcal/day to 3,234 Kcal/day;- For female crew members, from 2,486 Kcal/day to 2,574 Kcal/day.
The quantity and type of food in the daily diet are converted based on the Vietnam Food Composition Table issued by the National Institute of Nutrition - Ministry of Health.
The energy from nutritional components such as protein, lipid, and glucid in the daily diet accounts for the respective proportions of 13-20%, 20-25%, and 55-67%, ensuring a balanced diet with sufficient nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
In addition, Circular 40 also stipulates the number of meals, the quantity of food per meal, and reasonable intervals between meals in a day to suit working conditions on sea vessels. There must be a minimum of 3 meals per day (1 supplementary meal and 2 main meals) under normal conditions.
It is noted that the selection of food and the methods of food preparation should be appropriate to the religion, beliefs, and culture of the crew members.
Moreover, Circular 40 requires the menu to change dishes between meals during the day; and to plan the menu weekly to ensure the availability of sufficient food quantities according to the diet, and to meet the requirements for food preservation and preparation for the crew members.
