Circular 17/2015/TT-NHNN stipulates the banking code system used in banking activities and operations issued by the Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam on October 21, 2015.

Circular 17/2015/TT-NHNN stipulates that the bank code structure includes 8 characters and is divided into 3 groups as follows:
- Group 1: consists of the first 2 characters on the left, which represent the province code, the city under central authority code, or the common code used for cases where a branch of a credit institution is given a code abroad.- Group 2: consists of the next 3 characters following Group 1, representing the system code of the organization granted the bank code.- Group 3: consists of the last 3 characters, representing the ordinal number of the unit for each system in each province, city under central authority, or foreign location.
In addition, the Circular also stipulates bank information for the entity granted a bank code, which includes:
- Transaction name including full name in Vietnamese (as stipulated in the document from the competent authority), English name, and abbreviation;- Address of the entity granted a bank code;- Contact phone number, fax number, email address;- Type of credit institution (for credit institutions);- Type of unit (head office, dependent unit).
Note: Bank information exists alongside the bank code of the entity granted the code and will cease to exist when that bank code is canceled.
